Responsible land application of liquid waste

Biosolids are the organic matter recovered from a sewage treatment process. This Organic matter can be
managed three ways.

  1. Landfills
  2. Incineration
  3. Recycled

If recycled, it may be used beneficially in a land application situation. Crops, such as corn, soybeans, wheat, and other grains where the crop is harvested above ground. Also can be used for pasture and hay fields. In Colorado almost all biosolids are recycled. This process has been used since early times by farmers, and land use specialists. This process is regulated by the U. S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The advantages to recycling are:

  1. Diverting a material from landfills and incinerators
  2. Increasing crop yields
  3. A cost effective method to fertilize crops
  4. Adds moisture to the soil and increases the capability of soil to retain water
